Join Dr. Anton Treuer (pronounced troy-er) for a presentation about gender identity in Ojibwe culture. Dr. Treuer will share about pre-contact Ojibwe cultures, how they changed through the fur trade and treaty period, and some tools to better understand how our living Ojibwe culture today is shaped by the ancient ones, our colonial experiences, and modern political and cultural forces. What is the origin of "Two Spirit" as a label for those with gender identities outside of prescribed modern cultural norms? Is it still relevant and helpful. How can we better understand the historical and contemporary experience of LGBTQ2S+ people in Ojibwe spaces? Anton Treuer is Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and author of many books. His equity, education, and cultural work has put him on a path of service around the region, the nation, and the world.
