War & Memory: An Evening with Anton Treuer

  • Minnesota Humanities Center 987 Ivy Avenue East Saint Paul, MN, 55106 United States (map)

How does the memory of war shape the stories that a people tells about itself? This public event with Anton Treuer, Minnesota historian and author of 14 books including “The Indian Wars” and “Warrior Nation: A History of the Red Lake Ojibwe,” examines the power of memory in shaping social narratives.

What does it take to remember wars for their trauma, while also upholding the resilience of indigenous peoples dehumanized and drawn into conflict by the United States government? In an engaging discussion with Minnesota author Lesley Nneka Arimah, Treuer will discuss war, land, nationhood, fairness, survival, and sovereignty as he draws on his latest book, “The Indian Wars.”
