Navigating Gates and Gaps: Being Effective With Minnesota Students of Color

  • MN Education Association-St. Paul RiverCentre 175 West Kellogg Boulevard Saint Paul, MN, 55102 United States (map)

Everyone in education is looking for answers to improve student resiliency, retention, and graduation. How can we be more inclusive and generate the results all of our stakeholders want and deserve? Native American cultures contain a unique toolbox to help educators and equity workers decenter and combat oppression, cultural disassociation, other drivers for the “achievement gap.” Come learn more from and about the first people of the land. In addition to a thought-provoking challenge to our prevailing assumptions about education and equity work, this session is also designed to provide a meaningful opportunity for participants to expand their cultural awareness and competence in dealing with a unique population of often-marginalized students with greater efficacy. This session will draw from specific examples in the Native American experience, but demonstrate tools, strategies, and perspectives useful in helping all students be successful.
